Nathan flies out

Filed under: Family — Chris Curtis @ 16:00

Nathan’s flight to Madrid has just left Gatwick, delayed by one hour. He has a five-hour stopover in Madrid before flying to Santiago in Chile. He has a few days there before flying down the Andes and across Tierra del Fuego to the Falklands, where he will be for six weeks working in the hospital for his elective.

Orthotics

Filed under: Orienteering and Running,Personal — Chris Curtis @ 22:25

My sore shins are very slowly getting better and the training programme (see earlier posts) is beginning to work well, but I still have stiffness and sometimes pain when I try to run – even on the treadmill at the gym.

Following some careful reading and advice, I bought a pair of orthotics from Boots – their own brand and version. They cost me over £20 which is almost as much as my shoes! They are well made in a kind of firm but pliable plastic with a deodorant and antifungal cloth covering. They fill the rear 2/3 of my shoe and are shaped to support the heel and provide very strong arch support.

I wore them for an hour or two yesterday and inside my running shoes for a big gym session today. On the treadmill, I ran continuously for ten minutes covering “1.6 km” – this is further and longer than I have been able to do recently. All I had was a very little stiffness, and no after effects at all.

I will keep you posted, but they seem to be making a major difference already.

There are lots of warnings on the packets about self-treatment for undiagnosed conditions. I know I have very flat feet and that I pronate a great deal so orthotics make a great deal of sense for me – if in doubt, go to a podiatrist or physio.

A few bug fixes and the ability to handle military airfield colour codes in reports means that weather decoder is now in version 1.2.
