My first chance for the great globular cluser in Hercules. Definitely the best view I have ever had of it, despite it only just rising and well in the light pollution.
I took 40 5-second frames and combined them
20 30-second frames and combined them
10 1-minute frames and combined them
then used these to “combine to HDR” in photoshop. I am pleased with the way you can see stars all the way to the centre and with the resolution achieved in a small telescope.

This has to be my best image of a galaxy yet. Not the prettiest of galaxies, but there is quite a lot of detail in the image.

It was a remarkable night. The sky was empty of planes due to the volcanic plume from Iceland and the sky was literally a flawless blue all day but a little milky and pale rather than vivid blue. The night sky looked orange or even brown and was remarkably light but the seeing was good (the air was steady). I took the opportunity and was pleased with the results. This galaxy in Ursa Major is a struggle, I have found out, but it is a very interesting shape.

M3 reprocessed, originally uploaded by ThinkingCamera.
Another version from the data I captured on 12 April 2010. I did much less this time (there is a moral there!). It was stacked (40 ten second exposures were “sigma” combined which removes anything which is not on all the exposures – e.g. noise – and combines what is there to make it brighter. I then applied DDP and some levels before moving it to Photoshop, using Angela’s actions for vignette removal and to increase colour and sharpen. Final step was to size it for a 7inch x 5inch print – which is larger than the Atik 16ic camera can really do, but I think this image can take it.

A quick and dirty edit – the globular cluster M3 taken on a windy but clear night. I used a large number (about 40) images but each with only a 10 second exposure – the technique works.
This version has lost something – hurried development. I will work on it some more and re-post.
