As you might notice, this web site has a new theme, even if it is similar to the one it had before. Why? I hit a problem with the first post of 2019. The post would not appear when I built the site. I looked at it but could not see anything wrong. I tried changing the year in the post back to 2018 and it appeared. I assumed that there was something wrong in the template code running the site which meant it would only work up to the end of 2018.

Having decided to move from Wordpress to a static site, I had to find a generator. I don’t know enough, and have not explored enough, to have an informed opinion, but I will write about my particular experiences and try to explain why I am choosing to use Hugo What a Static Site Generator Does In theory it’s simple. The generator works through a series of folders on my local machine and parses the files it finds into a different series of folders and files that make a web site.

Wordpress I have used Wordpress for many years. If you don’t know, it’s a popular system (a content management system or cms) that lives on a web server and makes publishing a web site (especially a blog) much easier. There’s a “back end” you can log into, which shows you pages that allow you to set up the site and its appearance and which let you create content. It’s a bit like using a word processor until you hit the “publish” key.
